ABOUT
ANCHORED LIVES
Anchored Lives assists the neglected and marginalised people of society to discover and understand their natural gifts and talents. This enables them to achieve financial independence and to start a new life.
Through this programme the vulnerable people of society are anchored in their own natural smartness and talents. This is achieved through a journey of assessments, guidance and training, which equips them in starting a new life. In the long term this creates a thriving generational culture of hope in our society.
The Anchored Lives program enrols students who have already completed a journey with our House of Belonging partners (Straatwerk, MES, HACK, On the EDGE) – which means they have completed a restoration and rehabilitation program and are ready for the next step in becoming self-sufficient.
All students sign an agreement with Anchored Lives of commitment to operate within a framework of integrity, values and mutual respect. The end goal? To pay it forward.
OUR
FOCUS GROUPS
Prisoners
South Africa has about 161 054 prisoners, with 29 679 of them in the Western Cape. The Western Cape only has bed space for 20 779 offenders – a shortage of 8 900 beds. Most offenders are in jail for drug related charges and robbery. Unfortunately, 44% of released prisoners return before 12 months is over. The biggest reasons being social stigma, failure to re-integration in society and the lack of support in starting a new life.
Homeless
It is estimated that we have at least 4 862 homeless people in Cape Town (700 in the CBD). This is a group of people with strong social structures within their community. They are made up of well-educated people, professionals as well as individuals with low education levels.
Prostitutes
Women caught up in the system of prostitution
South Africa has approximately 153 000 active prostitutes (7 500 in Cape Town). It is near impossible to leave prostitution without an alternative sustainable source of income.
Undocumented People
South Africa has an estimated 1.8 million undocumented people (73% men,27% women). They come from various African countries such as Nigeria, Congo, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola. The biggest challenges in this group are timeous process of obtaining ID’s, visa’s and working/selling permits.
